The trouble with catching serial killers is that they look like everyone else.
It’d be preferable if they were easily identifiable, but those who commit murders can be so beneath notice that you could walk past one in the street and not know.
There are times when someone might take what seems like an innocuous photo, only for it to later become sinister because the photographer has accidentally captured a view of someone terrible moments before disaster.
One of the worst serial killers in history is Ted Bundy, who kidnapped, raped and murdered at least 30 women and girls, and attacked even more.
Estimates of the number of his actual victims are much higher, with some suggesting that Bundy murdered up to 100 people.
Two of his victims were murdered on 14 July, 1974, and a photo from that day might have captured the despicable serial killer in film while he was searching for his next victim.

The picture of Lake Sammamish State Park in Washington, Oregon, at first seems little more than an image of cars on a summer day.
However, in the photo is a VW Beetle, which is thought to have belonged to Bundy.
He was later asked about the photograph, to which he denied it was him, calling it ‘an interesting coincidence’ and that he didn’t mean ‘to burst your bubble’, adding: “That would have been fairly memorable. No, that I’m most certain that couldn’t be me.”
He also pointed that the car in the picture was missing a ‘ski rack’ – therefore, it couldn’t have been him.
On that day, however, people remembered seeing a young man in a tennis outfit with his arm in a sling who called himself Ted asking for help, and witnesses said they saw the man approach 23-year-old Janice Ott and she went with him, she wasn’t seen alive again, according to Biography.
Four hours later, 19-year-old woman Denis Marie Naslund went missing from the same area, the bodies of both women would be found on 6 September.
One of the VW Beetle cars in this photo is thought to have been Ted Bundy’s, and the picture was taken on a day where he would murder two women.
Other human remains were also found at the site and identified as 18-year-old Georgann Hawkins, another of Bundy’s victims.
Police received tips that Bundy may be a possible suspect, but they didn’t think he was the killer at the time.
The notorious serial killer would go on to commit several further murders before being arrested the following year in Utah, in his car a ski mask, handcuffs, rope and a crowbar was found among other tools.
However, it was decided that there was not enough evidence to detain him and he was released.
Bundy would later say that the search of his car missed a stash of photos he’d taken of his victims, which he claimed he then burned.
The serial killer would later be charged with crimes, and in 1976, he was sentenced for kidnapping and assault, after which he was sent to prison.
He twice escaped, going on to commit more murders before being apprehended.
Once behind bars, he withheld details about the murders he’d committed in an attempt to stall for time, but it was unsuccessful as he was executed in 1989.

Convicted murderer Chris Watts described his plans to end the lives of his pregnant wife and two daughters in a series of sickening letters from prison.
Chris is currently serving three consecutive life sentences for this killing of his pregnant wife, Shanann Watts, and their two daughters, Bella, four, and Celeste, three in 2018.
Commonly known as the Watts family murders, the case gripped the world in 2018 when it was revealed that oil field operator Chris had killed his entire family and pretended that they had simply gone missing.
Chris would make several appearances on national television pleading for information about his missing family, before it was later revealed that he had ended their lives. He would later admit to their killings in order to avoid facing the death penalty for his actions.
The horrifying story would later go on to be the subject of a harrowing Netflix documentary titled American Murder: The Family Next Door, which revealed that Chris had somehow managed to attract a series of dedicated female penpals, many of whom believed him to be innocent.
True crime author Cheryln Cadle would later be inspired to write a book on the Watts’ story and contacted the 39-year-old.
The pair would go on to exchange a series of letters while Chris was incarcerated at the Dodge Correctional Institution in Wisconsin, in the US, in which he made a series of chilling admissions about the murders.
Chris revealed he had been ‘thinking about killing’ his wife Shannan for weeks – partly due to an affair he was having with a co-worker – and he also admitted to secretly giving her OxyContin in an attempt to end her pregnancy.
Cheryln later published a book, The Murders of Chris Watts, in 2020, where she included Chris’ letters detailing his failed initial attempt to kill his daughters.
He tried to smother his children before murdering his wife, describing how his spouse’s ‘eyes filled with blood’ and her face got ‘all black with streaks of mascara’.

In a letter to Cheryln, he wrote: “August 13, morning of, I went to the girls’ room first, before Shanann and I had our argument. I went to Bella’s room, then Cece’s room and used a pillow from their bed [to kill them].
“That’s why the cause of death was smothering. After I left Cece’s room, then I climbed back in bed with Shanann and our argument ensued.”
Chris’ horrific attempt to kill his daughters had failed and the two girls, Bella, who was aged four, and Celeste, aged three, woke up.
He continued: “After Shannan had passed, Bella and Cece woke back up. I’m not sure how they woke back up, but they did. Bella’s eyes were bruised and both girls looked like they had been through trauma.”
He buried Shannan in a shallow grave close to an oil-storage facility and put his children’s bodies into crude oil tanks.

After exchanging letters with Chris at length, Cheryln went to visit him behind bars, which she called ‘surreal’.
In 2021, Cheryln spoke to Inside Edition about the shocking details she learned about the case, explaining how his eyes would turn ‘black’ when she spoke about the killings.
“At times, when he would talk about the murders, his eyes would turn so black. He just would get a different look on his face, and he talked about it so nonchalantly, like going down to get a cup of coffee,” Cheryln said.

The biological father of the ‘Deadpool killer’ has shared the gruesome details about the moment he learnt his son was a killer.
Florida native Wade Wilson, 30 – dubbed the ‘Deadpool killer’ for sharing the same name as Ryan Reynolds‘ popular Marvel character – has been convicted of brutally murdering Kristine Melton, 35, and Diane Ruiz, 43, in 2019.
Wilson’s case has gained a lot of traction across social media in the past couple of days, with the gruesome details of the heavily tattooed killer’s crimes being reported on amongst true crime followers.
One particularly chilling moment from the trial saw the moment Wilson’s biological father, Steven Testasecca, tell the court about a phone call where his son confessed to the crimes.

During the trial, Testasecca took to the stand to testify while his son watched on, detailing a conversation which took place over the phone on 6 October, 2019.
Testasecca revealed that Wilson confessed to Melton and Ruiz’s killings during the call, telling his father that there were ‘two people who were gone and would not be coming back’.
Testasecca then added that he initially didn’t believe the confession, calling his son a ‘good storyteller’.
During a later call, Testasecca revealed how Wilson went into detail about the killings, saying ‘I choked that b***h’ when talking about how he killed a sleeping Melton in her own home.
Melton was later discovered deceased in her own home, her body having been wrapped in sheets by Wilson.

Testasecca then went on to recall the graphic detail in which Wilson described Ruiz’s horrifying murder.
Wilson had lured Ruiz into the car – which he had stolen from Melton – before strangling her and pulling her from the car.
“He said that he pulled her out of the car and realised she was still breathing,” Testasecca told the court, adding: “He [then] said he got back in the car and ran her over until she looked like spaghetti.”
When asked by the court about Wilson’s demeanour on the calls, Testasecca revealed his son was ‘excited’ by his actions, adding that he didn’t appear to show any remorse.

Testasecca then went on to add that he was concerned that Wilson would’ve ‘done it again’ if he hadn’t turned him in to the police.
Following his trial, an emotionless Wilson was found guilty of brutally killing both Ruiz and Melton, with jurors at the Fort Myers courthouse voting for him to receive the death penalty for his crimes.
Wilson will be formally sentenced on 23 July, if he doesn’t receive the death penalty he will spend life in prison without parole.

The final words of a death row inmate ahead of his execution have been released.
Brian Dorsey was sentenced to death in 2006 following his conviction for murdering his cousin, Sarah Bonnie, and her husband, Ben Bonnie.
The 52-year-old killed the pair while their four-year-old daughter was at home, though she was left unharmed.
According to documents, Dorsey had called his cousin before the attack, looking to borrow some money to pay off drug dealers who were at his flat.

Appeals on behalf of Dorsey, including from the advocacy group Death Penalty Action, were denied by the US Supreme Court.
Governor Mike Parson also rejected a clemency request, and Dorsey received the lethal injection at the state prison in Bonne Terre, Missouri, at 6:11 p.m local time on Tuesday (9 April).
He took several deep breaths followed by a few shallow breaths before dying.
Ahead of his execution, Dorsey submitted a written letter in which he expressed guilt for his crimes.
He said: “To all of the family and loved ones I share with Sarah and to all of the surviving family and loved ones of Ben, I am truly, deeply and overwhelmingly sorry.
“Words cannot hold the just weight of my guilt and shame. I still love you. I never wanted to hurt anyone. I am sorry I hurt them and you.

“To my family, friends, and all of those that tried to prevent this, I love you; I am grateful for you. I have peace in my heart in large part because of you and I thank you.
“To all those on ALL sides of this sentence, I carry no ill will or anger, only acceptance and understanding.”
Prior to his execution, Abraham Bonowitz, the executive director of Death Penalty Action, told The Mirror that Dorsey was a trusted inmate and deserved a second chance.
“Clemency is supposed to be about whether a person is worthy of mercy, not a retrial of the facts of the case,” he said.

“Brian Dorsey is so trusted that he is the prison barber, using sharp instruments on corrections workers, but it seems Governor Parson just doesn’t care. Parson would deny clemency even to Jesus.”
Dorsey’s lawyer, Kirk Henderson, claimed that over 70 correctional officers backed his case.
He said: “Brian Dorsey is kind, gentle, hardworking, and humble.
“He has spent every day of the past 18 years trying to make up for the single act of violence he committed, serving the prison community as the staff barber and never getting in even the slightest trouble.”
However, rejecting any call for clemency on behalf of Dorsey, Gov Parsons said ‘the pain Dorsey brought to others can never be rectified’ and that ‘Missouri law and the Court’s order will deliver justice and provide closure’.

A 10-year-old boy has openly admitted to murdering a man in his own home.
Brandon O’Quinn Rasberry, 32, was found dead in his mobile home on 18 January, 2022, following a call to his landlord from his employer, Holmes Foods, after he hadn’t showed up to work in two days.
The Gonzales County Sheriff’s Office announced on Thursday, 17 April that a 10-year-old Texas boy confessed to the murder that happened two years ago.
In the statement that was shared with local newspaper the Gonzales Inquirer in 2023, the sheriff’s office stated that Rasberry’s family was ‘incredibly heartbroken’ and just had their ‘first holiday season without’ the 32-year-old.

The man was found with a single gunshot wound in his head, though detectives found no leads after a search of the area and forensic analysis of the victim’s mobile phone data.
Up until 12 April, 2024, the case went unsolved until it was reported by a Nixon-Smiley Consolidated Independent School District principal that a 10-year-old boy had threatened to assault and kill another student on a school bus.
It was later revealed by a school official that the elementary school student said he shot and killed a man two years ago, according to authorities.
He was then taken to a child forensic interviewer, and horrifically ‘described in detail’ what he did to kill a man that was inside his trailer in Nixon, Texas, when he was just seven-years-old.
The boy detailed that on 16 January, 2022, while visiting his grandfather who lived in the same RV park as Rasberry, he carried out the heinous crime.
He had never met Rasberry, having only seen him walking around that day, according to the release.

After taking a pistol from his grandfather’s glove compartment, he went into the food worker’s mobile home while he was sleeping and fired a single shot at his head, before firing another into the couch, before leaving and putting the gun back in the glove compartment.
The boy then told the interviewer that the gun was pawned off by his grandfather, which was later recovered in Seguin, Texas, and forensics analysis proved that it was used in the murder of the man.
Following the psychiatric evaluation and treatment, the 10-year-old was booked on charge of making a terroristic threat relating to the school bus incident.
This was the only charge given, as the Texas Penal Code states that ‘a child does not have criminal culpability until they reach the age of ten years old’, and since he was only seven when he carried the murder out, murder charges have not been filed.
Nixon-Smiley Independent School District Superintendent Jeff Van Auken shared in a statement with local news station KSAT, that he will not be allowed to return to the elementary school campus, after the district cooperated with the investigation.
