Some stories have the power to break our hearts into a million pieces, and Althea’s story is definitely one of them. This amazing dog, found on the streets of Las Vegas, Nevada, has endured things that are hard to imagine. As a seven-year-old dog, she only weighed twenty pounds and was severely neglected by her previous owner, causing her to often go hungry!
Fortunately, thanks to the generous community that noticed her in this condition, Althea got a chance at a new, dignified life! The good people at Vegas Pet Rescue Project (VPRP) in Las Vegas, Nevada, immediately adopted Althea after a local shelter contacted them.
When she first arrived at VPRP, her caregivers couldn’t believe their eyes. She was the most obvious example of unfair treatment and neglect of animals! They immediately realized that this starving dog must have had a difficult life before. She weighed only twenty-three pounds, although for her breed and age the norm should be about sixty.
Her story soon made headlines across the country, leaving thousands of people in disbelief that someone could do this to such an innocent creature. “Althea is a seven-year-old pit bull who was found on the street in serious condition. It was clear that she needed help and had not eaten normally for a very long time,” reporter Victoria Sakha wrote on her Facebook. They also noted that when she was found, hundreds of people walked past her and did not react at all!
The VPRP community was determined to find out the name of Althea’s abuser. They even offered a reward for information about the abusers, the amount of which grew to tens of thousands of dollars in a short period of time. The people of Las Vegas (and beyond) were passionate about finding justice for Althea.
