Rescuers moved quickly at a building site to save a mother dog who was buried in sand that had collapsed. Knowing the mother’s and her babies’ lives were in jeopardy, they started the laborious process of sifting through the debris with delicate yet quick motions.
Holding their breath as they removed each handful of sand, the rescuers looked for life in the oppressive blackness. When they discovered one youngster, safe and alive, their efforts were rewarded, but they were devastated to learn that not all of the puppies had made it through.
Still, there remained optimism among the sorrow. It startled the rescuers to observe movement inside the sandy mound as they carried on with their laborious task. They carefully removed another dog, a little warrior fighting against the consequences of asphyxia.
Rescuers moved the surviving babies and their worn-out mother to a makeshift shelter so they could rest and heal. Burlap blankets were spread out to offer warmth, and the mother dog clearly had found a secure sanctuary as she tucked her priceless pups in.
When the rescuers returned a week later, they were thrilled to see the mother dog and her pups doing well, in part because of a neighbor who had given them food every night. It served as a reminder to us that miracles may still occur even in the worst of circumstances and to the strength of the canine spirit.
